LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR

Laura Thorsten

Experience.
Compassion.
Dedication to the Individual.

Laura is a Licensed Professional Counselor who is originally from the northeast part of the country.  She has been happy to call Texas her home for over twenty five years.

Ms. Thorsten’s professional background is rich in diverse experiences.  With an undergraduate degree in Health Education (1986) and a graduate degree in Counselor Education (1992), she brings a holistic point of view into her practice. She has been able to do extensive work helping adolescents, adults, couples, and families cope with relatively minor to severe mental health challenges.  As well, Laura’s highly intuitive nature and insight are valued assets in her chosen career.  Through it all, Ms. Thorsten takes pride in her warmth and professionalism.

Entering into a therapeutic relationship with a licensed professional is an important decision.  It’s often helpful to know ahead of time what type of psychological premises and techniques the therapist typically ascribes to when providing services.

Ms. Thorsten’s therapeutic style is heavily influenced by humanistic psychology principles.  This perspective says that each unique individual inherently strives toward a healthier and stronger sense of self.  It emphasizes personal choice and responsibility.   Additionally, Laura may employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy techniques, Neuroscience and psychobiological strategies, Psychodynamic (“depth”) Therapy principles, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), the "Flash Technique" using EMDR concepts, Internal Family Systems (IFS) psychotherapy, techniques gleaned from Narrative Therapy, or straight-forward career counseling methods.  Since no one client is the same, no one plan of action will be the same.  Ms. Thorsten strives to provide compassionate, client-centered help using a toolbox of researched modalities.

In terms of working with couples, Ms. Thorsten is a proponent of and trained in the evidence-based models researched and implemented by Dr. John and Julie Gottman, Dr. Sue Johnson (Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy), and Dr. Stan Tatkin. She also uses methods derived from Internal Family Systems (IFS) concepts, "Attachment Theory," psychobiological principles and practice, sex therapy training, and other therapeutic models. While these models for change can be very helpful, it is also important that both individuals in the couple want to make the relationship “work.”  Laura can help guide the decision making process and plan from that point forward.
